Certified Organic Is Good For You,
For The Cattle, And For The Planet
While 100% grass fed beef has more
flavor and lower fat than grain fed meat,
grass fed meat that is also organic has
more health benefits.

Here are a few of the standards for
organic certification of cattle:

* The cattle must always be treated
humanely, be in the pastures as much as
possible and always have access to
fresh air and exercise.

* They are kept healthy with high quality
pasture and a low stress, natural living
environment, not with medication.

* The pastures that organic cattle graze
and fields that produce their hay must be
free of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides,
herbicides and other harmful substances.
Genetically modified seeds can't be
used. Our pastures are full of the native
grasses and plants that grow naturally in
the fields.

* Our meat is 100% grass fed. But some
meat sold as grass fed is from cattle that
are 'finished' with grain, often corn. If the
meat is organic, the grain can't be
genetically modified, or full of pesticides
and herbicides used on the fields.

* Organic cattle can't be treated with
antibiotics, growth hormones, fly sprays
or other harmful substances at any time.

* Harmful chemicals can't be used in the
barns or on the fields for cleaning, pest
control or any other reason.

*Organic farms must keep the land
naturally fertile, control erosion of the soil
and protect the water supply.
If It's Not Certified Organic...

Many small farmers who raise grass fed meat
use organic practices even though they may not
be certified organic. Their cattle are well cared
for, they're healthy and stress free, the farmers
care for their land, and don't use harmful
substances.

But the larger the herd, the more likely the cattle
are raised by a 'corporate farm' that isn't as
concerned with the way they raise their cattle.
Their websites and labels show healthy animals
in lush pasture, and say that their grass fed meat
is 'all natural'. What does that mean? If they're not
organic, you don't know.

The best way to know about the quality of your
food is to know the farm. Can you go to the farm?
Talk to the farmer? Do people in your community
know the farm? That's one reason buying locally
is so important.

If you're interested in buying our meat and want
to see how our cattle are raised, just let us know.
We'd like to meet you, and we think you'll enjoy
seeing the farm. Children love it too!

We're
Certified
By
NOFA-NY

Although we started farming organically in
the 1980s, we didn't apply for certification of
our pastures, hay and produce until 2000.
Starting in 2006, the cattle born here are also
certified organic under USDA organic
standards. Our certifier is the Northeast
Organic Farming Association of New York
(NOFA-NY).
